HRM540 Week 5 Journal Entry

HRM540 Week 5 Post Course Assessment and Journal Entry:  Week 5 Learning Log What Surprised You? What surprised me most this week was reflecting on the amount of material that was covered in this course! As I added the Week 5 research to my PLN, I realized the extent of not only the material and topics that were covered in this course, but also how useful of a reflection tool that the PLN is and how it can be used at any point as a resource in my career. For example, when I am working in HR and need to develop a training program, I have my PLN to reference for topics such as talent analysis, development and training. I think that even after I complete this course, I will create a PLN for my course moving forward so that the takeaways from each of my classes as a part of my master's program can be reflected upon and used as I develop my career in HR. Another thing that surprised me this week was Week 5 Discussion 2, the case study. I was shocked when I read this at first and ...

HRM540 Week 4 Journal Entry

Week 4 Learning Log: What Surprised You? What surprised me the most about W eek 4 ’s learning material were the different points of view in the Week 4 discussion 1. Nowadays, it seems that the latest technology is the option that many organizations desire with regard to training to stay competitive as an employer. Even before the global pandemic struck, many organizations were eager to jump on the e-learning or online training bandwagon. According to an IDC survey back in 2016, “53% of enterprises outsource at least some portion of their learning (Taylor, 2016). This is likely because many companies do not have the resources to handle many of the learning needs that their employees may have, and they will therefore outsource specific skills for a short period while the organization is going through changes (Taylor, 2020). However, it is surprising how quickly training programs develop with different methods (such as gamification) that can be used to ensure employees are complian...

HRM540 Week 3 Journal Entry

Week 3 Learning Log:  What surprised you? This week, what surprised me most was the W eek 2 Discussion 1 assignment. When I first read the assignment details, I was unsure of what the assignment had to do with HR, if anything. However when completing the experiment, I was able to connect it to how teamwork, communication and strategy go a long way in helping an organization run smoothly, and how significant these key factors are towards an organization's success. I thought that this assignment was a fun and creative way to open up the topic of teamwork for this week's lecture and discussion material. Another area in week three that surprised me was the individual assignment, where we were given the task of addressing a current challenge at our organization and then completing three different analysis tools to better understand the root cause of the issue. I feel that it is very important for an organization to not be hasty with business decisions, and to thoroughly revie...

Week 2 Learning Log What Surprised You? One topic that surprised me this week was learning about all of the individual steps needed to prepare for an employee's first day, as well as the day 1 and week 1 activities and responsibilities that HR has to prepare for the new hire. I never realized how intricate and how much involvement is required when getting a new hire on board. Another topic that surprised and intrigued me was employee development, specifically Week 2 Discussion 3 about performance reviews. I have never had a performance review before, and after learning more about them I am really looking forward to my first one at the beginning of 2021, especially because it will be the first time my organization holds a performance review. I think it will be very insightful to see how my performance has been perceived, determine what areas I can improve upon and be offered advice on future potentials. I am especially excited to discuss future potentials and opportunities wit...

HRM540 Week 1 Journal Entry

Week 1 Learning Log What surprised you? This week, the fact that I found most surprising are the large varieties of different HRM softwares that exist to help HR with their processes. I found that Week 1 Discussion 2 was very helpful because it broke down the different HR software tool types based on the HR application. As I researched various HR software tools and added them to the group excel document, I found that ADP workforce and Monday.com fulfilled many of the requirements in HR (employee data, time and attendance, scheduling, benefits, PTO, recruitment, performance management and more). I think saving this excel document will come in handy when I work in HR, especially if the company is weighing out different HR software options, and want to make the best decision with regard to the budget as well as company needs. Additionally, completing a competency model was a new experience for me. Though the concept behind competency models seems simple, I can see how understand...

Week 5 Learning Log Part 2

Value of SHRM Connect: As mentioned previously, SHRM Connect gave me a positive experience for not only my class but for my career as an HR professional. I felt that there was much value in lurking/analyzing information as well as participating in the forums by posting my own questions and gathering useful information. To what extent was this helpful in providing you with insight into the various issues from an HR perspective? I was able to become familiar with various issues from an HR perspective. For example, one area where HR tends to struggle is with their managerial role and being viewed as leaders within an organization. I noticed several posts on the topic of strategic contribution as an HR manager and how to effectively work and determine different approaches to being a strategic partner. What surprised you about what you observed on the SHRMConnect forums? I was surprised at how many other students there were on the SHRM connect forms. I felt reassured that tho...

Week 5 Learning Log

Overall Observations/Reflection: Over the last four weeks, I have been actively using Blogger alongside SHRM connect. SHRM Connect is a part of SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management). SHRM Connect is a community where a member of SHRM can create discussion posts, ask questions, reply, and get answers on a variety of HR-related topics. It is used by students and HR professionals alike and is also a great way to get connected with others in the HR field as well as to obtain relevant ideas. Blogger is the tool I used after gathering information from my fellow SHRM members about the weekly topics at hand and apply them to my current studies with the topics from my HRM501 class. The weekly topics were as follows: 6 Paradoxes Facing HR: I became familiarized with the six paradoxes of HR. I focused my research as well as a blog post on the organization and individual paradox es, and how it's critical as an HR professional to be aware of employee needs within an organ...
