Week 4 Learning Log Part 2

Most Valuable Information:

Though there were no responses to my initial SHRM connect post this week, I was able to research other discussion boards on SHRM connect in order to learn more about the importance and significance of technology in the HR role. Below are links, citations as well as screenshots of notable conversations that I found.

William Campos talks about how collaboration tools are essential to enable people to communicate virtually across the globe. (Campos, 2017). This allows for team projects, meetings and the sharing of best practices (Campos, 2017). William uses Adobe Connect as a collaboration tool at his company (Campos, 2017).

In Debra Cooper’s post/thread, Tanya Johnson talks about the impact that social media has on organizations. She states that social media networks are only as valuable as the effort and number of participants using it (Johnson, 2014). She goes on to mention that as an HR professional, that it is important to manage the behaviors on the social media, implement best ideas as well as improve collaboration with social media in order to achieve goal-oriented measures (Johnson, 2014).

Within Debra’s same thread, Lissy Almedia points out that LinkedIn is a great tool for not only networking, but for recruiting purposes as an HR professional (Almedia, 2014).LinkedIn can also be used to advertise open positions within a company (Almedia, 2014). Lissy then adds that her company also uses StarMeUp, which is an internal tool similar to Facebook that managers use for employee recognition (Almedia, 2014).

Within Delma Flores discussion post/thread, Tracy Begalke posted that her company uses Slack to facilitate communication (Begalke, 2018). Tracy’s company has 50 employees and 13 remote employees and thinks that Slack is a fun tool to communicate with remote partners and gives the company a sense of unity (Begalke, 2018).

Ayodele Oshuntolu’s Post discusses how HR can take advantage of using social media’s internal platforms to promote workplace interaction through connecting employees, which allows them to share information, cutting edge ideas, and problem solving (Oshuntolu, 2015).

 Application in Working with HR:

After gathering the above information while searching in SHRM connect, I feel that I was able to gather some valuable input from other people within the community. Along with this information, I was able to answer my initial question: What are some examples of the tools and platforms used in your company, and how to do they affect your organization?

I found the following examples of some of the tools other members within the SHRM community use within their organization, and how they are used for effective and collaborative communication:

-      Adobe Connect: conference video call platform
-      LinkedIn: professional social media tool
-      StarMeUp: employee recognition tool
-      Slack: internal employee communication tool

People within the SHRM connect community all seem to be supportive with the utilization of the tools and platforms that are used by HR, managers and employees within their organizations. I feel that these tools are the future of communication, especially as organizations further develop this technology.
