Week 3 Learning Log Part 2

Most Valuable Information:

These weeks on SHRM connect, I did some further research on communication audits, and how they tie in with HR with attention to collaboration. Linked, cited and photographed  below are the discussion resources that I found most insightful.

Bilis, A. (2014) Communication Audits. SHRM Connect. Retrieved from:

Christopher Whittier talked about the importance of communication audits, and how they are a tool for HR to find areas of development within a workplace (Whittier, 2014). He mentioned one effective way of going about a communication audit is through a survey, and ensuring that all individuals take the survey autonomously (Whittier, 2014). This allows for employees to be most honest about how they feel the current methods of communication are within a workplace, which is beneficial for an HR manager to know.

Within the same thread, Tayana Johnson also contributed to the discussion. She brought up the point that though anonymous surveys are an effective method of gathering information, it is very shallow information and only breaks the surface on what needs improvement. In order to get a better understanding, she recommends that HR professionals form focus groups in addition to conducting an anonymous survey (Johnson, 2014). This way, HR professionals can further investigate the employees, investors, shareholders, managers and customers to understand the bigger picture (Johnson, 2014).This will allow an HR manager to better analysis the overall communication health of the company (Johnson, 2014).

Mfon Bassey explains how a communication audit allows a clear understanding on how effective employee communication is within an organization. He also outlines the areas where performing a communication audit will allow an HR professional to understand the current state of communication with employees, the efficiency of information being spread across an organization, what strategies are working and not working, support of current methods of communication and employees options on what’s missing or could benefit the company (Bassey, 2019).

William Campos discusses the importance of using collaboration tools for a communication, specifically for long distance situations. He mentioned cyber-forums and how these allow individuals to work together on projects, meetings and collaborate (Campos, 2017). This organization uses Adobe Connect as a cyber-forum.

Application in working with HR:

After researching SHRM connect and the above insight, I am able to fully understand the ramification of why HR professionals use Communication audits as well as answer my question: what are some effective methods of collaboration in order to enforce alignment for a shared mindset across an organization?

I learned that communication and collaboration go hand-in-hand, and that it is important for an HR professional to know the current conditions of both within an organization. HR professionals can gather input from the employees of an organization by conducting an anonymous survey, followed by a focus group meeting. This allows HR professionals to investigate further and communicate with the employees with a more holistic and collaborative approach. Another effective method of collaboration to ensure effective communication is through tools, such as cyber-forums. Cyber-forums allow for communication with distance, whether it be between manager, employees, or customers. By using these collaborative tools, HR managers can determine what communication methods are a success within an organization, and what areas require improvement.
